Modernization of the offer and order process

lT Republic supports Sanitas in modernizing the offer and application process, a central core process of health insurance.

IT challenge
‍The offer and application process is triggered by customer interaction. If a customer wants an offer, various regulations must be followed to check which products can be offered at which price. If the customer submits the signed offer, the application processing starts, which uses a risk assessment (underwriting) to assess whether any risks arising from answered health questions can be insured. The offer and application process has so far been implemented as a monolith. This led to various problems:

• Only four releases per year are possible, leaving Sanitas struggling with a significant backlog of requirements.
• The systems are reaching their performance limits.
• The systems are aging and have limited expandability.

Our solution
‍The monolith is being replaced by a modern microservices architecture based on Java Spring Boot. Camunda is also used as a process engine, which executes the processes modeled using BPMN and checks the rules mapped using DMN. The architecture has various advantages for Sanitas:

• Time to market: The architecture supports more frequent releases, allowing Sanitas to react more quickly to market changes.
• Automation of manual tasks: The modernization project enables the restructuring of the offer and application process, as well as the automation of manual tasks.
• Online channel: The new solution allows customers to receive offers via an online channel and submit their applications immediately. This eliminates media breaks and waiting times for the customer.
